Make A Difference Day
“Celebrating
extraordinary deeds performed by ordinary people on America's
largest day of doing good.” – from the Make
A Difference Day website
It’s Spooky To Be Hungry® is a proud participant in Make
A Difference Day, the “national day of doing good”. Make A
Difference Day is the largest single day of coordinated community
service in the United States. It is a “national day of helping
others -- a celebration of neighbors helping neighbors.” Make
A Difference Day was created by USA WEEKEND Magazine, and
last year over 3 million Americans participated in it through
local volunteer service projects.
Several years ago we realized that Spooky’s target collection
day (the fourth Saturday in October) coincided with Make A
Difference Day. We decided to become part of the huge national
network of local community service projects that comprises
Make A Difference Day. Spooky remains entirely independent
of Make A Difference Day, but our mutual goals of developing
community service and strengthening community have resulted
in a natural partnership. Not every Spooky chapter chooses
to register with Make A Difference Day. But those that do
are connected in spirit with millions of volunteers throughout
the US, who participate in thousands of local service projects.
In 2003 and 2006, Spooky CSRA was recognized as the regional
Make A Difference Day honoree. In April 2005, It’s Spooky
To Be Hungry® was named one of ten National Honorees, receiving
nationwide recognition and a $10,000 award from Paul
Newman. Volunteers from Spooky CSRA were featured on the
cover of USA Weekend Magazine, and Spooky was highlighted
in their cover story. To read more about our award, click
